Here is some general information on the subject of septic to sewer conversions in the suburbs of the greater Atlanta area.
Background: Why might you consider a septic to sewer conversion? Older houses have septic tanks but may have sewer available now. Septic fields eventually fail and need to be replaced. Some cities will not allow a new field to be installed if sewer is available. The lot size may be too small for septic based on new regulations.
Procedure:
- Determine if sewer available, check price of sewer connection. Some counties may require engineer to do flow test on main to determine whether it can handle any more capacity of sewage flow. Some properties may have an existing sewer tap on the property or a manhole on the property. Determine whether a plumber will install the sewer tap or the county will install the tap. Varies county to county.
- Determine if there is gravity fall from house to location of sewer tap. If there is not enough fall or the tap is up hill of the house, an ejector pump system may be needed. This can be verified visually if house in some cases or exactly using a transit or surveying equipment where the height of the outgoing drain of the building is close to the height of the receiving sewer tap.
- Get necessary permits for installing sewer line
- Pump out old septic tank, Crush old septic tank lids and fill will compactable fill or #57 stone. If possible, break hole in bottom of tank to allow for rainwater drainage. Install sewer line from building to sewer tap, installing necessary cleanout at the building and tap connection as required by the county.
- Backfill and compact trenchline.
